All You Need To Know About Sunglasses
Here’s why fake sunglasses could harm your eyes.
FUNCTION OF SUNGLASSES
Is Sunglasses an Accessory for Beauty or is it a Need?
Eyes, like skin, require proper care and protection. Sunglasses block UVA and UVB rays from reaching your eyes. Children need the right sunglasses too! One can actually get up to 80% of a lifetime of sun exposure before they turn 20. Therefore, it is important that they
have a pair of sunglasses as well. There is evidence that UVA and UVB damage can increase the risk of macular
degeneration, one of the leading causes of age-related blindness as well as eye cancer. Wearing sunglasses can protect one’s eyes and circumvent these concerns.
However, sunglasses alone may not be insufficient. Further protection by avoiding the peak hours of UV rays is a good habit. If possible, avoid going into the sun from 8 to 10 am and 2 to 4 pm as the risk of sun-related eye damage is the greatest during these hours. Make the switch and see the difference!
CHEAP/FAKE SUNGLASSES
Is it Okay to Buy Cheap and Possibly Fake Sunglasses?
Wearing fake sunglasses is a big NO! In fact, fake sunglasses can cause more damage to the eyes than not wearing any sunglasses at all. So how does it happen?
When you put on a pair of sunglasses, the darker shade tricks your eyes into thinking that it is dim and the pupil expands to allow more light to enter your eye. However, the fake sunglasses fail to block the UVA and UVB light from reaching your eyes. In fact, they actually allow more UV light into your eyes as compared to when you do not wear any sunglasses, where your pupil is smaller and less UV light enters your eye.
As a result, fake sunglasses can actually cause more damage to the eyes than not wearing any sunglasses at all. Therefore, while you may be tempted, do not opt for cheap and fake sunglasses. It is extremely important that you choose the right sunglasses for your one and only pair of eyes.
